Patan Museum is housed in a courtyard within the Northernmost building complex of the Durbar area. The most picturesque setting of the palace that has been created in so small a place by piety and pride is known now to the people as Keshav Narayan Chowk after a temple standing at the center of the courtyard dedicated to Keshavnarayan- a form of Lord Vishnu. This part is recorded in the history as Chaukot Durbar or four-cornered-fort-palace.In an International Campaign by UNESCO for safeguarding the monuments of Kathmandu valley, the Austrian Government joined hands with Nepal Government to preserve Patan Darbar Square. The ensuing project began in 1982 with the repair of Keshav Narayan Chowk that led finally to the transformation of a teaching museum to dessimination of knowldge on Buddhism prevailed in Patan- city of Art and Architecture. This is the first public museum in Nepal that has been created as an autonomous institution of this type managed by its own Board of Directors. The museum has been acclaimed, by the visitors, as one of the finest museums in South Asia. The popularity is growing day after day and is economically self sustained now.The collaborative effort of Austrian Government with Nepalese counterpart did not only restore the historical palace to its original grandeuer but also created a Model Cultural Institution in Nepal.

Patan is one of the sub-metropolitan cities of Nepal located at the southern side of Bagmati River. It is best known for its rich cultural heritage and intangible. It is also called as city of festival and feast. Patan Museum is located heart of this culture inside the Patan Darbar Square complex.
Patan Durbar Square-Legend and History
In the center of Patan, at the Intersection of its main crossroads is the medieval Palace square, locally known as Mangal Bazaar for its Sanskrit connotation of being auspicious, or simply as “Mangah” its root in Old Newari meaning "Center". In this complex for more than two centuries the dynasty of the late Mallas held the privilege to embellish the square with impressive choice of other monuments, pillars and minor shrines.
Although some of the palace's earlier history is lacking in evidence and conclusive detail and the existing inscriptions are shrouded in obscure devotional language its past is not "unknown" to the people of Patan. It is full of legend and myth, often with a different version of the same story or two conflict in one. The Palace area must have already been a center of royal power during, the first millennium as testified on a stone inscription (date 643 AD) in the main courtyard (Keshav Naryan chowk ) of Museum, and another inscription ( date 560 AD ) at Manidhara , next just to the north of the Museum.
Another myth of this complex, a small river once was flowing along what is now the palace front. It is still under ground as a storm water and sewer drain since Malla times. A Buddhist monastery was built on its bank where a bright flame had auspiciously emanated from the waters. In a later time, the monastery was shifted to another location to make space for an extension of the Palace. So every year during the holy month of Gunla (Aug- Sep) a Buddha image is immersed in the consecrated water of a copper vessel placed directly in front of the Golden Door and worshipped by the faithful.
In 1630 AD the Palace was called "Chaukot" , denoting a castle or fort with four towers, the built recollection of which are the two surviving tower pavilions at the corner of Palace's front wing.
The existing palace is the work of King Vishnu Malla dated 1734AD. During the ancient period there was fort in that settlement. Thus, the historicity of the palace can be traced a long time back. The first mention of “Chaukot” in a historic document is from the time of King Siddhinarasimha Malla in 1630 AD. The palace was renovated by King Srinivas Malla in 1674 AD and also by Vishnu Malla in 1734 AD. Since 1997 AD Medieval Patan Royal Palace is transformed to the Patan Museum.

Patan is from the historial periods has been the place of art creation. It has not only developed her art forms, also exported its school to the farflung places of Tibet, Mangolia and China.
The mission of the Patan Museum is the interpretation of Sacred Art, Culture and Iconography of Hinduism and Buddhism through preservation and exhibition.
Patan or Lalitpur, (“Yala” as it is known by its inhabitants, the Newars) is one of the three great cities of the Kathmandu Valley, which is the historical center and cultural heart of Nepal. The settlement began as a number of villages situated on a fertile plain above the Bagmati River, probably threaded along a trail that can still be identified as a diagonal within the modern street pattern. The literal meaning of Lalitpur is “the city of fine arts”. It is best known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its tradition of arts and crafts.
According to mythology, Patan was created in the 6th century by King Birdeva. He was instructed by Sarveshvara, a form of Shiva, to establish a city in the form of a yantra, an auspicious symbol having nine jewels in the center, eight protective deities on the periphery, and twenty four city sections. Likewise according to an another mythology, Patan city was designed and built after the Buddhist dharma Chakra.
